Stewart Title Insurance an interview with Mitch Creekmore
Stewart Title Insurance an interview with Mitch Creekmore
With the gratifying news that Stewart Title plans to open more offices in Mexico, Mitch Creekmore shook my hand with trademark strength. “Of course we consider Puerto Vallarta a key market and are already looking at office space in the Marina area.
Within three months we should be ready.” The only international guarantee title insurance underwriter allowed under Mexican law, Stewart Title began operating in the country 10 years ago and this year expands its Houston-based operation to add Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Puerto Peñasco and Cancún to the current Mexico City office.
“It’s most important that buyers of real estate in Mexico remember that they are in a country where the laws are not the same. Protection of the investment is crucial, and too often they don’t even know the right questions to ask. We help not only developers as they purchase property but also the individual who is buying a primary residence. All transactions are funded through an escrow service so their money is secure.”
A writer himself, Creekmore handles the Houston office in the position of vice president and manager and is a frequent contributor to realtor magazines and publications. The Web sites and www.steward.com.mx, offer some of his insights and experience for even the most casual buyer. Not withholding information in his “six principles to help buyers avoid risks,” he spells it out:
1. Does the seller have legal ownership, can it be transferred legally?
2. Search ownership status by hiring counsel or a title insurance company.
3. Review through counsel the buy/sell agreement, with a direct effect on terms and conditions.
4. Arrange for escrow of funds through a title company.
5. Protect against errors, liens or misrepresentation by obtaining property ownership insurance.
6. Examine documents of owners’ rights, obligations and restrictions when the property is a condominium.
All types of property can be insured against the unexpected, whether residential, commercial or industrial. Stewart Title offers the security of over 110 years in the industry with the expertise and technology to provide timely, cost-effective solutions to your investments. As Creekmore cautions, “Buying property in Mexico is not like buying property in the United States or Canada”.
